Coping with drivers, signing sponsors, repairing crashes and making large selections; System 1 Staff Principals have quite a bit to deal with. On the most recent episode of the F1 Explains podcast, Williams Racing boss James Vowles solutions listener questions on his wide-ranging job.

Vowles turned Staff Principal of Williams for the 2023 season. Since then, he has signed race-winning driver Carlos Sainz to hitch confirmed performer Alex Albon and has instructed the staff to deal with reaching success in 2026, when the game’s new guidelines provide a chance to bold midfield groups. Securing new title sponsor Atlassian is one other main achievement of Vowles’ time in command of Williams.

Chatting with F1 Explains podcast presenter Christian Hewgill, Vowles explores each space of his job, together with what he does on the pit wall throughout a Grand Prix.

“I am lucky to have a extremely robust staff round me which might be doing all of the exhausting work, actually”, says Vowles, who was in command of race technique at Mercedes earlier than stepping as much as the highest job at Williams.
